I've always had a romantic spot for a gathering around the table. Whether it's a simple meal with my husband or a gathering of too many people we barely fit it makes my heart sing. There is something safe in that space. A place to block out the noise of the world that was unkind to you, a place to laugh freely, share the depths of your heart and a place to stop for a moment and focus on the people who bring you joy.
I care about food, about the taste, where it comes from, how nourishing it is. I can't stop meal planning with the hope of caring for my family and friends. I live for the nights when healthy ingredients come together in such a delicious way that people linger at the table a little longer so they can fit seconds in their bellies. I love when food gives opportunity for deeper conversations and the sharing of real life. What a gift we have been given in fruits, veggies and meats.
Recently, I've been trying to slow down for mealtimes with my daughter so we can laugh at the new textures she tries while spitting out the peas that she loved last week. I believe taking advantage of mealtimes is an important way to refocus on what matters in the midst of busy sometimes frustrating days. Even when I worked in a corporate office I packed healthy foods and took 30 minutes to myself, it was such an important time of the day for me, when I made sure my head was on straight... kind of like that first cup of coffee. Now, don't get me wrong, some meals are on the go, or eaten while walking to car because you are running late, but what would happen if we made an effort to sit at the table...to stop the chaos of the modern day for minutes? How deep could our relationships go?
This summer I'm challenging myself to make dinnertime a chance to check in with those I love and to sit down at the table whether that is to enjoy take-out or a home cooked meal. I invite you to try the same.
